How do you know if your periods are heavy?Well, heavy periods are defined as losing over 80mls of blood over the course of your period- this works out at 8 fully soaked super tampons or 16 fully soaked regular tampons.
For SO many women I see, heavy periods hugely affect their life!
The most important thing to understand is that heavy periods are not normal and they could be due to either a hormonal imbalance (like excess oestrogen), fibroids, polyps, cysts or even endometriosis.
If you have PAIN and HEAVY bleeding I would definitely recommend going to your GP and please don’t accept the pill or prescription painkillers as a cure, ask for a referral for an ultrasound and get bloods checked!
For the majority of women that I see in my clinic- heavy periods are due to lifestyle factors: food/exercise/stress/poor digestion which are contributing towards excess oestrogen in the body (remember that oestrogen makes things grow; including the uterine lining!) It’s honestly scary but also amazing how much nutrition can impact hormones!
I also use herbal medicine for heavy periods too and they work like magic!
